Nutrition coach: practising correctly thanks to sound training and continuous professional development

Despite the proliferation of fast food restaurants, a proper and healthy diet is becoming an increasingly important need for a growing number of people. However, difficulties often arise when it comes to implementation, which is where a nutrition coach can offer support. In order to practice this profession successfully and professionally, you need sound training.

Depending on the school offering, there are various nutrition courses, each with different course content and topics. However, the following topics are always included in the course:

  • Change of diet
  • Creation of a nutrition plan
  • Exercise and nutrition
  • Nutrition during illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding, etc.
  • Weight reduction and weight maintenance
  • Dietetics
  • Diabetes
  • Current findings from health research

Some nutrition courses also include topics such as knowledge from different cultures, the New Life method, the 5 elements concept, the vegan concept and the fasting concept.

Schools offer a wide variety of courses to become a nutrition coach, most of which are offered on a part-time basis. One exception is the Bachelor's degree course in Nutritional Counseling BSc, which can only be completed full-time. At some schools, however, it is possible to continue working full-time during the nutrition coaching course, but in this case the duration of the course is often up to three years or more. If you would like to complete the nutrition coaching course in a shorter period of time, a reduced workload is preferable, as a few hours of self-study per week are required in addition to the classroom teaching. However, it is best to discuss this point with the relevant nutrition coaching schools and get individual advice.

If you want your services to be covered by supplementary health insurance, you need either a corresponding federally recognized training (bachelor's degree in nutrition and dietetics to become a nutritionist BSc) or continuing education, further training as a nutrition coach that complies with ASCA or EMR guidelines.

For aEMR recognition150 hours of specialist training and 600 hours of conventional medical training are required for nutritional counseling (method no. 68). If you would like to register as a nutrition coach with method number 218 - dietetics (NHP) according to TEN, this is only possible in combination with method group no. 131, naturopathic practices NHP (naturopath). For TCM nutritional counseling according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, 300 hours of training must be completed, whereby training in method group no. 185 TCM must already have been completed. Ayurveda nutritional advice (method 24) can be supplemented with 150 hours of specialist training with method group no. 22 (Ayurveda).

To ensure that such specialists are optimally equipped for their future tasks, they are trained in the following areas, among others:

  • Nutrition in the course of life: childhood, adolescence, pregnancy, old age, special features of vegetarian/vegan diets, during periods of stress or strain
  • Nutritional psychology: understanding and influencing eating behavior, emotional aspects of eating, recognizing habits, motivation and goal setting in coaching
  • Special forms of nutrition: Intermittent fasting, low carb, paleo, clean eating, etc.
  • Prevention and health promotion: nutrition and diseases of civilization (obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases), promotion of a healthy lifestyle, basics of health communication

  • Law, ethics & quality
A nutrition coach deals with all issues relating to human nutrition and its effects on the body. He advises healthy people, people with slight weight problems and recreational athletes on how to adapt their diet to their everyday life and their performance level. Nutrition coaches are aware of the importance of healthy eating for the body, know the effects of incorrect eating behavior and can help people to (re)find a healthy and positive attitude towards food.

  • You can attend shorter courses that train you as a nutrition coach or give you an insight into the basics of healthy eating.
  • For people who are looking for training that is recognized by health insurance companies and enables them to bill their services to the insurance companies, a diploma course to become a nutritionist is recommended. For registration with the Swiss Foundation for Complementary Medicine (ASCA) in nutritional counseling (WAM - Western Alternative Medicine) for the area of prescribed methods (Method 229), three levels of training must be completed. However, not every school offers Level 2 or even Level 3 in addition to Level 1, the conventional medical basics with the degree of Nutrition Coach Practitioner. Level 2 enables graduates to combine nutritional advice with therapeutic applications, which is mainly implemented in medical practices and nursing or retirement homes. Level 3 is an in-depth study of the fundamentals of conventional medicine and completing this is a prerequisite for registering as a therapist with ASCA.
  • Another option for comprehensive training in nutritional counseling is a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics at a university of applied sciences, which can be followed by a Master's degree. Further education in the form of a CAS (Certificate of Advanced Studies), for example in Nutrition for Disease Prevention and Health (FIT), is also possible.

In Switzerland, training to become a nutrition coach/nutritionist is not a federally regulated training course. This means that the course content and focus can vary from school to school.

The content is generally based on current scientific findings and practical topics relating to nutrition and health. The aim is to impart specialist knowledge that enables competent advice to be given in various life situations.
