Are all nutritional therapist training courses federally recognized?
No. Certificate courses in nutrition therapy are not federally recognized.
The situation is different for the BSc in Nutritional Counseling, the Master of Science in Life Sciences with a specialization in Food, Nutrition and Health and the MAS (Master of Advanced Studies). It is also possible to take the Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) in Psychosocial Counseling with a federal diploma following the Nutritional-Psychological Counseling course.
There are also specializations in the field of naturopathy with a specific nutritional theory and therapy (e.g. traditional Chinese medicine or Ayurvedic medicine). These paths also lead to officially recognized qualifications via the Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) and the acquisition of the Federal Diploma in Naturopathy.
How much does it cost to train as a nutritional therapist?
The cost of training to become a nutritional therapist varies greatly depending on the school and the scope of the course. For example, training to become a qualified nutritionist SPA costs CHF 5,600, training to become a qualified nutrition therapist SPA costs CHF 22,800, training in nutritional-psychological counselling IKP costs around CHF 25,000 and continuing education, further training in individualized nutrition therapy costs around CHF 8,000.
Do I need any special prior knowledge to train as a nutritional therapist?
No previous knowledge is required to train as a nutritional therapist. You will learn everything you need to know for your future work in nutritional counseling during the course.
How long does it take to train as a nutritional therapist?
Training courses in nutrition therapy last around one year. They generally comprise 130-170 hours of classroom instruction and require basic medical knowledge and, in some cases, basic nutritional knowledge.
