The foreign trade specialist is active in the export of goods. As an expert in foreign trade, a sound knowledge of international forwarding, customs and VAT law, international marketing, foreign trade financing and international law is required.

 

Foreign trade specialists (formerly known as export specialists) can work as specialists or generalists in companies that export or import. In administration, they can work in order processing, internal sales, export sales, shipping, distribution logistics, supply chain management or dispatch. In addition, the processing of documents at internationally active banks, where bank guarantees, documentary collections or letters of credit are issued, is a possible area of responsibility. Insurance, tax and customs issues, export risk guarantees and exchange rate hedging are also areas of training. An export specialist can work in forwarding companies, logistics companies and transport insurance companies. The export specialist is able to recognize the risks and opportunities of international trade, speaks several languages and can adapt to the different customs of international customers and negotiate accordingly. The international market is known and the potential of target markets abroad can be recognized on the basis of sound marketing knowledge.

 

The export specialist is also familiar with Switzerland's foreign trade and its framework conditions for international trade. He clarifies legal issues relating to sales law and jurisdiction, laying the foundations for the proper conclusion and smooth processing of contracts with customers from abroad. The export specialist is used to extensive clarifications in sales processing with regard to taxes, customs duties and insurance, and he promotes the company's sales with his specialist knowledge.

Questions and answers

For continuing education, further training as an export specialist with a certificate, professional experience in foreign trade is not absolutely necessary, but is of course an advantage. The situation is somewhat different for a course in preparation for the Federal Professional Examination. Here, at least two years of professional experience in foreign trade after completing an apprenticeship, a commercial college or a high school diploma is expected as a prerequisite.
The duration of the training courses for foreign trade specialists FPE (formerly export specialists FPE / import specialists FPE) varies greatly. For example, the certificate course for export specialists lasts less than two months, while the preparatory course for the Federal Professional Examination takes one to one and a half years.
A certificate course for Export Specialist / Import Specialist or Foreign Trade Specialist, as this training is now called, is an advanced training course that awards you an internal school certificate if you pass the final examination, such as a "Basic Knowledge in Foreign Trade" certificate from the College of Higher Education for Foreign Trade. However, unlike a federal certificate, which you receive if you pass the Federal Professional Examination (AFPE), this is not a federally regulated continuing education, further training course that entitles you to take further training courses, such as Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE).
Continuing education, further training to become an export specialist requires a Federal VET Diploma, a commercial secondary school diploma or a high school diploma and a further two years of professional experience in foreign trade, which corresponds either to work in import, export, forwarding, transit trade or international trade. For your future job you should be able to work in a team as well as take the lead, be responsible and service-oriented, mathematically and calculatively talented, as well as linguistically and in foreign languages. An open and friendly nature, punctuality and accuracy are part of your character, as well as organizational talent and the urge to keep up to date with the latest laws and regulations (customs clearance, documents, target markets, etc.).
