The scope of classroom assistant training varies depending on the training provider. For example, 10 days (Curaviva continuing education, further training) spread over almost 8 months is possible.

Knowledge of one's own professional role and the associated tasks and limitations is particularly important for a classroom assistant. The perception of the field of action of one's own function between the child or young person, the school and the teacher are also important skills that are taught during training as a classroom assistant, as well as the development of action skills in connection with action skills and knowledge of care, developmental support, accompaniment or animation approaches for children or groups, depending on the individual focus. The individual training institutions will provide you with detailed information on the skills to be acquired during such continuing education, further training.

Continuing education, further training in the field of classroom and school assistance can be aimed at people who would like to work in this function in the future and therefore want to familiarize themselves with the topic, or at people who are already working as classroom assistants and would like to develop professional foundations and strategies for action. Socio-educational staff in schools and employees in school facilities, such as after-school care, can also be a target group.

Training to become a classroom assistant is definitely useful for working in homework help or homework supervision. This is because it teaches the relevant methodological and didactic skills. In addition, knowledge of conversation and individual support is taught, which is helpful in helping with homework.

As each continuing education, further training course for classroom assistants has a different structure and focus, we can only provide a list of examples here:

  • Support in lessons (e.g. practical support with tasks & work phases, accompanying small groups or individual pupils, support with excursions, project days, break supervision, handling learning materials and digital tools)

  • Reflection & practice (e.g. Swiss school system and school organization, rights & duties of assistants, data protection, duty of confidentiality, child protection)
