Studying fashion design - your key to success

A fashion design course at higher technical college level is not exclusively open to clothing designers and is not exclusively aimed at those who have completed basic training in textiles or fashion. The course is offered by higher technical colleges and is also aimed at career changers without relevant professional experience or basic training. The course is therefore open to anyone with a passion for fashion and a soft spot for design. It forms a top foundation for a career as a fashion designer and is also a helpful basis before studying at a university of applied sciences.

The Fashion Design course at the HF has a modular structure. The individual modules of the course can also be attended independently of each other. The following four modules make up the course:

  • Introduction to the visual world of fashion
  • Fashion drawing
  • Moodboard
  • Collection

In all modules, graduates are encouraged to discover and develop their very own and unconventional style. They learn to think and work innovatively and develop their very own design language under professional guidance. As a result, designs and inspirations are already implemented during the course, whereby the professional handling of materials, various techniques and the processes of design are taught in a practical manner.

Are you looking for more detailed information about the fashion design course, such as the course dates and the cost of further education? Would you like to find out more about the schools that offer this course? At Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch you can quickly and easily order free and non-binding information material.

Questions and answers

After completing a fashion design degree, graduates can pursue various activities not only in the fashion world. In addition to freelance work as a fashion designer, they can work as an assistant in a team of designers, in a trend office as an employee, in purchasing, merchandising, customer service or in publishing, for example in advertising or in a fashion editorial office. Fashion designers can also find employment in theater or film, for example in costume and set design.

Anyone wishing to study fashion design must have an upper-secondary level qualification, i.e. either a Federal VET Diploma or a school-leaving certificate, and be at least 18 years old. Those with exceptional design talent can also be admitted without an upper secondary school leaving certificate following a dossier examination. If these requirements are met, applicants undergo an admission procedure consisting of a project assignment, work documentation and a letter of motivation.

After completing their fashion design studies, graduates are awarded the federally recognized title of "graduate designer CHE product design" with a specialization in fashion design.

Graduates of a fashion design course at CHE have a sound technical, creative and technical education that enables them to work professionally as fashion designers. From conception and pattern design to production, students acquire extensive specialist skills that enable them to realize their own individual designs. They also acquire knowledge about materials, use, modern technologies, planning and communication, financial business management and the legal framework. The final semester concludes with the creation of their own collection.

The cost of studying fashion design is around CHF 9,240 per semester for residents of Switzerland or the Principality of Liechtenstein. In addition, there are expenses for personal utensils, equipment and materials.
