Depending on the task and company, you will take on different processing and decision-making competencies. Insurance specialists with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education are responsible for organizing and protecting policyholders against the financial consequences of personal or material dangers or risks in the event of accidents and/or claims. They often work in customer service as advisors. You have an overview of the possible effects of claims. You also understand the internal and external contexts of your chosen insurance sector.

You can specialize in the area of personal insurance or property and asset insurance, with a particular focus on practical application. You will use your specialist knowledge to analyze risks and plan optimal insurance cover. The review of a claim usually takes place on site, where you deal with the given facts. You are therefore constantly faced with new challenges, as negotiations must be conducted to the satisfaction of all parties involved. A claim is often preceded by clarifications with experts from other sectors.

The insurance specialist from the claims department checks the coverage and liability issues for incoming claims notifications after the various facts have been compiled. Depending on the function and company, you have different processing and decision-making powers. In the sales force, on the other hand, you sell insurance benefits. In order to conduct negotiations successfully, you need to master the most important basic rules of service marketing and sales. You must be familiar with information on rates, special conditions, the conclusion of contracts and the most important principles of insurance law, and you must always be informed about the latest offers in the industry.

You will find a wide range of jobs in middle management in the following areas: in the benefits/claims area, in the field service, in sales or consulting at agencies or at the insurance company's head office, in public administration, at various associations and organizations. However, you can also specialize in one area within the banking or insurance sector.

Module structure Federal Professional Examination for Insurance Specialists with Federal Certificate:

  • Compulsory modules - in-depth study of insurance fundamentals
  • Elective modules - specialization in subject area
  • Process modules - final audit of a core insurance process

Proof of valid module certificates (compulsory modules and three elective modules) is part of the admission criteria for the federal examination. The module examinations must not date back more than five years.

Graduates of the Swiss Federal Diploma of Insurance Specialist who aspire to a management position and are interested in the overall context of the insurance industry can enter the Higher College of Insurance HIA without an examination and benefit from the waiver of individual parts of the course.

Graduates of the course are characterized by a broad knowledge of the insurance industry and have in-depth knowledge in specific specialist areas. Their high level of expertise qualifies them as service providers in defined insurance processes.

The Federal Professional Examination in Insurance provides in-depth knowledge of relevant topics in the insurance industry. The modular structure ensures that both the basics and in-depth specialist knowledge in various areas are covered.

  • Compulsory modules
    These four basic modules form the foundation of the training and are mandatory for all participants:
    • Personal management - development of self-management and professional competence
    • Insurance industry - understanding the economic relationships in the insurance industry
    • Insurance law - legal framework and contract law
    • Insurance marketing - marketing strategies and customer-oriented action in the insurance sector
  • Elective modules
    Three modules must be individually selected and completed from the following subject areas. They allow you to delve deeper into specific insurance sectors:
    • Property insurance
    • Asset insurance
    • Technical insurance
    • Transport insurance
    • Individual life insurance
    • Group life insurance (mandatory / extra-mandatory)
    • Banking and Finance
    • Health insurance (mandatory / non-mandatory)
    • Accident insurance (mandatory / non-mandatory)
    • AHV / IV and other social insurances
    • Insurance medicine
  • Process modules
    In addition, one of the following process modules is selected. These focus on central processes in practice and form the basis for the examination case:
    • Underwriting, including product management
    • Claims and benefits processing, service management
    • Sales and support
    • Broking

The federal final examination focuses on one of these core processes.

 

This modular structure enables practical specialization and prepares students specifically for various fields of activity in the insurance industry. From legal aspects to product development and customer advice - the content is varied and practice-oriented.

The following admission criteria apply to the Federal Professional Examination for Insurance Specialists:

  • Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (Federal VET Diploma, apprenticeship certificate) as a private insurance clerk and 2 years of professional experience in the insurance sector

or

  • Other Federal VET Diploma, completion of a federally recognized commercial secondary school or Baccalaureate, passed the "VBV insurance intermediary" exam and 3 years of professional experience in the insurance sector

or

  • Passed the "Versicherungsvermittler VBV" exam and 5 years of professional experience, including 3 years in the insurance sector

and

  • Proof of the required valid module certificates or confirmation of equivalence
