The part-time program at a College of Higher Education requires a completed apprenticeship with a Federal VET Diploma in the commercial sector or retail, or a diploma from a commercial secondary school. Unlike programs at a University of Applied Sciences, a Federal Vocational Baccalaureate or a high school diploma is not required. Another advantage of studying at a College of Higher Education for marketing is that, unlike the Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) in marketing or sales, management experience is not required for admission. It is therefore possible to be admitted to this program with professional experience in marketing-related fields and to complete this comprehensive, generalist-oriented training. Those who earn the Federal Diploma in Marketing Management (CHE) are able to lead projects, manage employees, and achieve marketing goals.
Completing a recognized training program to become a marketing manager leads to the protected title “Dipl. Marketing Manager CHE.” This degree is part of higher vocational education at the continuing education and training / tertiary level and certifies your practice-oriented technical and leadership skills. Starting in October 2026, you will also be entitled to use the title suffix “Professional Bachelor.”
With a business degree or an apprenticeship in retail, you can enroll directly in the CHE program under certain conditions. The continuing education program to become a marketing manager prepares you for challenging roles in marketing, sales, and communication. This will give you a solid foundation for taking on project or leadership responsibilities later on.
The marketing manager training program typically lasts three years, or six semesters. Depending on the school, you can choose between evening classes, classes on specific weekdays, Saturday classes, or a combination of in-person and online formats. This allows you to balance your continuing education, further training, with your full-time job.
With a Swiss Federal Certificate in Marketing or Sales, or as a Technical Business Administrator, you can take advantage of an accelerated degree program at various schools. Other advanced degrees may also be accepted for credit. Depending on your prior education and the program provider, it is possible to enter directly into the second year of study and earn your diploma in just two years instead of three.
As a marketing manager, you not only specialize in specific marketing tools but also possess comprehensive business management knowledge. You analyze markets, develop marketing strategies, plan budgets, and evaluate the success of your initiatives using key performance indicators. In addition, you gain skills in project management, communication, and leadership.
Accredited CHE programs may be supported through intercantonal funding for Colleges of Higher Education. If you meet the requirements, you can benefit from cantonal subsidies that can significantly reduce your tuition fees. Check with the school of your choice to find out the actual costs and any possible additional fees.
After you graduate as a marketing manager, you’ll have a variety of options for professional and academic advancement. These include post-diploma programs at CHE as well as bachelor’s degree programs at Universities of Applied Sciences, such as in business administration or communication. Admission requirements and the possibility of having your previous education credited toward your degree will be reviewed by the respective institution.
Even without a relevant commercial apprenticeship certificate, you may still be eligible for admission to the marketing manager training program. If you hold a different Federal VET Diploma or a general education diploma and have relevant professional experience in marketing or sales, you may be considered for individual admission. The school will review your qualifications and determine whether additional documentation is required.
Many Colleges of Higher Education regularly assess your progress through module exams, case studies, and practical assignments. This allows you to continuously apply and deepen your knowledge. The program concludes with a qualification process, which typically includes a thesis. The specific exam format varies by school.
As a student in the marketing management program, you’ll benefit from instructors who often work in marketing, sales, or management themselves. They not only teach theoretical fundamentals but also share practical examples and experiences from their daily professional lives. This gives you valuable insights and inspiration for your own professional development.
