In certain sectors, there is higher vocational training in the form of a professional examination (BP) or higher professional examination (HFP) to become a project manager. In most cases, there is no specific training. In other sectors, courses or specific further vocational training are offered that qualify a person for this function upon completion. There are also various training providers that offer general training in project management. However, internationally recognized certifications such as that of the IPMA (International Project Management Association) are also becoming increasingly important nowadays. In some sectors, however, a tertiary-level qualification (federal professional examination or higher professional examination, higher technical college, university of applied sciences, university of applied sciences) or further training at postgraduate level is a prerequisite for the role of project manager. In most cases, project managers must have professional experience in the respective professional field.

There are the following possible qualifications in the field of project leadership and project management through project leader and project management training:

• qualified project manager NDS HF
• Project manager with federal diploma (industry-specific)
• Project manager with a federal certificate (general or industry-specific)
• internationally recognized certifications such as IPMA
• Certificate courses with school diplomas

The following requirements are set for a project management course with Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE), e.g. as a Web Project Manager:

• Specialist certificate or diploma of higher vocational education in the fields of IT, organization or sales or equivalent certificate and at least 3 years of professional experience in web project management since graduation

or

• Degree from a Universities in the fields of computer science, organization or sales or equivalent degree and at least 3 years of professional experience in web project management since acquisition

or

• Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training in the fields of mediamatics, information technology, organization or sales, a high school diploma or equivalent and at least 5 years of professional experience in web project management since obtaining the diploma

and

• Proof of the required module qualifications or certificates of equivalence
